Over the years, Mexico has positioned itself as a strategic commercial partner, not only because it´s geographic position but for the diversity resources, products and capital that offers. Nowadays, Mexico is one of the fifteen largest economies in the world and the second one in Latin America. It is also the 11th largest exporter in the world and the first one in Latin America. Its 13 Free Trade Agreements with 50 countries benefits at least 1.3 billion of consumers around the world.

Also, Mexico participates actively in multilateral and regional organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OCDE) and Latin American Integration Association (ALADI).

The most interesting thing is the meaning of the commercial relation that Mexico has with the world is part of our daily lives. As consumers, it is fundamental to be informed about the product we have access to and their origins to understand the importance of fair, competitive and effective trade agreements. We will present you the 13 Free Trade Agreements between Mexico and the World.

Before we start to mention the free trade agreements, do you know what a free trade agreement is?

A Free Trade Agreement is a trade agreement between two or more nations (bilateral or regional) that seeks to expand the market for goods and services between the participating countries. It aims to improve their relations in economic and trade terms through specific rules and the elimination of obstacles (such as tariffs or taxes) on imports and exports.

Free Trade Agreements between Mexico and the world:
  • Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) – Successor of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and it is one of the most important ones of the region.
  • Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and Peru (Mexico-Peru FTA)
  • Pacific Alliance – Formed by Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.
  • Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership – The most important multilateral trade negotiation in recent years. It currently comprises eleven countries in the Asia-Pacific region: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.
  • Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and Colombia (G-2 FTA)
  • Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and Israel (Mexico-Israel FTA)
  • Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and Central America – Formed by Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
  • Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and Chile (Mexico-Chile FTA)
  • Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and Japan (Mexico-Japan FTA)
  • Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and the European Free Trade Association – Formed by Mexico, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
  • Mexico-European Union Free Trade Agreement
  • Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and Panama
  • Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and Uruguay
