On Friday, December 23, 2022, the President of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) announced that an agreement will be signed with the country of Ecuador in which import tariffs will be eliminated, it will focus mainly on imports, but in the same way, topics related to the export of products from both countries will be discussed. Based on the foregoing, the President of the Mexican Republic assured that the President of the South American country, Guillermo Lasso, was very interested in making agreements of this type in which the products of both nations are involved, since since 2018 the Ecuadorian country He was interested in making trade agreements with the member countries of the Pacific Alliance.
Although it is true that, as in any agreement, there was a moment of uncertainty due to two products that are of great importance in both nations: shrimp and plantain (also known as bananas), since President AMLO was decisive on this point. In the same way, the Minister of Foreign Trade, Julio José Prando, on December 24, 2022, commented that if these two products were not in the agreement, Ecuador would not sign it; This is not the first existing obstacle in this treaty since its negotiations were stalled in May 2022 and remained in this way until October, when the dialogue was resumed. Despite this, President López Obrador affirmed that both plantains and shrimp would maintain import tariffs, all with the aim of continuing to support national producers who are mainly located in Chiapas, Veracruz, Michoacán, Colima, Tabasco, among others.
